Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends of the
National Association of Planning Councils (NAPC),
Hello! This is an exciting time for NAPC and we would welcome your
involvement. Here are some updates.
2006 CONFERENCE
May 4-7, 2006, in Toronto..."Community Planning and Diversity...Partnerships
for Inclusiveness, Social Justice and Community Well Being"
From the thought-provoking panels and roundtables,
to the opening reception at City Hall, to the bus tour of Toronto's diverse
neighborhoods, to the celebration banquet in Chinatown--this year's
conference is taking shape as NAPC's largest and one of our most interesting
conferences ever. Americans attending this conference will have a unique
opportunity to meet a whole new network of colleagues doing similar work all
across North America. Our Canadian co-sponsors are convening leaders of
planning councils from all across Canada and this will be their first
gathering--they will be laying groundwork for forming a national association
like NAPC.
Conference
APRIL 3rd is an important deadline!
. The hotel's reservation deadline is April 3rd. Call
416-203-3333 to reserve a room in our room block at the discounted rate;
tell them you are part of the planning councils group.
. April 3rd is also the "early bird" conference registration
deadline to qualify for the lowest rate and for the additional discounts
on multiple attendees from the same organization. Full details and
registration forms are online:
www.communityplanning.org. You may still register after April 3rd as
long as space is available, but early registration both for the hotel and
for the conference are very strongly encouraged.

MARCH MADNESS MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

conference qualify for a $50 discount on 2006 dues. Details and the

INTERESTING UPDATES FROM
TWO NAPC MEMBERS
Long-time NAPC leader and internationally-known
indicators expert DAVID SWAIN recently returned from a trip to the Himalayan
Kingdom of Bhutan, which is launching an initiative to develop a "national
happiness index" of indicators. See David's fascinating
article about this.
Hurricane Katrina may be over but the resettlement work continues. NAPC
board member MARTHA BLAINE has provided this
overview
of recent work by the Community Council of Greater Dallas (Learn more during Martha's session at the conference.)

WEBSITES OF INTEREST
The website of the Social Planning Network of
Ontario (co-sponsor of the upcoming 2006 conference in Toronto) features
the values and work of social planning councils in Canada, as well as a list
of their member councils, with links. See:
www.spno.ca/
Many NAPC colleagues are interested in the work of the Community
Indicators Consortium. (CIC co-sponsored our 2005 national conference;
NAPC co-sponsored the other two CIC conferences, in Reno and Vermont). The
CIC website now includes some presentations from their December 2005
conference, links to indicators projects around the country, publications,
and a statement of guiding principles. NAPC board member Ben Warner (new
president of the CIC board) tell us that plans are underway for some
interesting future content for the website. See:
