Dan Alaniz was also a conference speaker, sharing his expertise on preparing computer systems for Y2K, and describing innovative ways the Community Council is now using its website.

CONFERENCE SPEAKERS ...
Friday's Luncheon Keynote Speaker was Judge
John Creuzot,
Presiding Judge of Dallas' DIVERT Court Program;
he explained the success of this Dallas initiative to place people
in treatment rather than jail after substance abuse-related arrests.
Conference speakers included Phil Dessauer (Community Service Council, Tulsa, OK), on the increasing magnitude and changing face of poverty, and Cheryl Chambers (U.S. Census Bureau, Washington, D.C.), on The American Community Survey - below.

Norman Moorehead (Community Council of Greater Dallas' Director of the Dallas Area Agency on Aging) told of America's growing population of older people and the need to help people plan for all aspects of life after retirement. Venus Burgess (Substance Abuse Coalition - Human Services Council, Norwalk, CT) described a successful initiative to prevent youth substance abuse - below.

Neighborhood community building initiatives were the focus of presentations by David Swain, internationally-known as an expert on indicators - below

and David Hoffman, from the Community Building Institute in San Diego - below.

Steve White, from the Metropolitan Council in Chattanooga, TN, shared insights about the Community Impact Fund planning and implementation process.

HUD's expanding roles in community building were explained by HUD Community Builder, Melodie Shatzer of Dallas.

NAPC Board members Nancy Findeisen (Sacramento, CA), Mary Louis Campbell (Norfolk, VA) and Elaine Andersen (Norwalk, CT) enjoyed learning about other councils' work by gathering materials from the conference resource tables.

On Friday night,
Keynote Speaker Curtis Meadows, of Dallas' Meadows
Foundation,
described "The Future of Responsible Philanthropy"

to a very responsive audience, at a Tex-Mex buffet dinner
hosted by the Community Council of Greater Dallas (below).

On Saturday,
Breakfast Roundtable sessions were enjoyed by Karen Wulfkuhle (Overland Park, KS), Stephanie Ross (Norwalk, CT), Bob Spinks (Oklahoma City, OK) and David Swain (Jacksonville, FL) - below.
Later, Bob Spinks gave the conference's closing presentation about how the role and work of the Community Council of Central Oklahoma have evolved, especially since the Oklahoma City bombing disaster.

First-time NAPC conference participants H. Browning Spence (Pinellas Park, FL), Judith Rothbaum and Joanne Horn (Oklahoma City, OK) met for a Breakfast Roundtable discussion.

NAPC Board members David Swain (Jacksonville, FL) and Nancy Findeisen (Sacramento, CA) welcomed Bill Bivens, from the U.S. Census Bureau in Washington, D.C., who shared valuable information about the upcoming Year 2000 decennial census.

Denise Harlow (right; Community Council of New York State, Albany, NY) greeted Stephanie Ross (Human Services Council, Norwalk, CT), who gave a conference presentation about the innovative work of Norwalk's initiative addressing homelessness.

Prof. Ralph Cousins, Director of the Nonprofit MBA Program at the University of Dallas' Graduate School of Management, made a very interesting presentation about characteristics of nonprofit managers, based on his recent study. Afterward he discussed findings with colleague Marilyn Self, newly-appointed Assistant Director of the Community Council of Greater Dallas.

Julie Thomas, Executive Director of Dallas' Volunteer Center, provided useful information about current trends in volunteerism and implications for nonprofit organizations and communities.

Karen Walz, Executive Director of The Dallas Plan, outlined this model which is of great interest to planners in other communities across the country.

Paul Gilmer, Executive Director of the Community Council of Kanawha Valley in Charleston, WV, stimulated participants' thinking with his presentation about effective boards of directors.

Tools and tips for using Geographic Information Systems in health and human services planning were demonstrated by Leanne Gilley (Geo/Info, Inc., Tyler, TX) and Jim Olson (Community Resources Council, Topeka, KS).

Joining conference participants were long-time NAPC colleagues and friends, Russ and Grace Delatour. Retired Executive Director of the Community Council of Greater Dallas, Mr. Delatour was a founding member and past President of NAPC. Travels, grandchildren and many community and church activities now keep the Delatours' lives very full.
